  • ARP: Alternate Retirement Plan
  • ASC: College of Arts and Sciences
  • AW: Advanced Writing
  • AWP: Association of Writers and Writing Programs: holds major creative writing conference every year that MFA students and faculty attend
  • AY: Academic Year
  • B&F: Business and Finance Office (university)
  • BOT: Board of Trustees (university)
  • BTAA: Big Ten Academic Alliance (academic arm of the Big Ten)
  • CAA: Council on Academic Affairs (university curriculum committee)

  • DL: Distance learning course (100% virtual)
  • DMAC: Digital Media and Composition institute--summer institute for graduate students and faculty from around the world
  • DMP: Digital Media Project (directed by Elizabeth Falter)
  • EDC: English Department Council. Meets monthly and includes all faculty and staff as well as undergraduate and graduate student representatives
  • EGO: English Graduate Organization
  • ENGL: Registrar's prefix for courses offered by English
  • EUGO: English Undergraduate Organization
  • FIT: Faculty Foundation, Impact, Transformation program: year-long program for new faculty administered by the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning
  • FOD: Facilities, Operations, and Development, a department within the Office of Administration and Planning (handles building management)
  • FPL: Faculty Professional Leave (sabbatical for tenure-track faculty)
  • FTE: Full time equivalent (HR term for appointment time)
  • FY: Fiscal year (starts July 1)
  • GE: General Education curriculum (required of all undergraduats)
  • GEL: General Education--legacy (registrar's code for GE for students who enrolled prior to fall 2022)
  • GEN: General Education--new (registrar's code for new GE, which launches fall 2022)
  • GFR: Graduate Faculty Representative
  • H: Honors course (when following a course number)
  • HR: Human Resources
  • HY: Hybrid Delivery course (25-74% virtual delivery)
  • MCC: Multicultural Center (Ohio Union)
  • MFA program: 3-year degree program (Master of Fine Arts) in Creative Writing
  • MLA: Modern Language Association (professional organization for English faculty and graduate students)
  • OAA: Office of Academic Affairs (provost's office--chief academic office)
  • ODI: Office of Diversity and Inclusion (university office)
  • OIA: Office of International Affairs
  • OTDI: Office of Technology and Digital Innovation (includes the office formerly known as OCIO, which was formerly known as OIT)
  • OPERS: Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (staff pension fund)
  • P: Registrar's marker for a course that is offered 100% in person
  • PCard: Visa card that can be used to pay for business expenses (see Sarah Beaumont-White)
  • PI: Principal Investigator (used when submitting grants)
  • PN: Project Narrative (directed by Professor Jim Phelan)
  • PNSI: Project Narrative summer institute (non-credit program for researchers outside of Ohio State)
  • PO: Purchase Order
  • P and T: Promotion and Tenure
  • RAISE: Race, Inclusion and Social Equity initiative: university program for recruiting faculty doing research on these topics
  • RPAC: Recreation and Physical Activities Center (next door to Ohio Stadium)
  • S: Service learning course (when following a course number)
  • SA: Special Assignment (shifting a course assignment for a faculty member to a dedicated service or research project)
  • SIS: Student Information System (Buckeye Link Class Search)
  • SLDS: Student Life Disability Services
  • SPO: Sponsored Program Officer (handles large grants from outside the university)
  • STRS: State Teachers Retirement System (pension plan)
  • TBDBITL: Ohio State marching band
  • TIU: Tenure-initiating unit (English serves as the TIU for most of its tenure-track faculty)
  • T/R: Tuesday/Thursday class ("R" stands for Thursday on the university calendar)
  • UH: University Hall (location of ASC dean's offices)
  • WAC: Writing across the Curriculum
  • WIL: Writing and Information Literacy--new name for first-year writing; every English 1110 course fits into this category
  • WRL: Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacy (area group within the department)
