Undergraduate Student Awards

Alumni donors have funded dozens of awards and prizes for outstanding Ohio State English students. THOMAS ANTES | WIL-E Prize for Outstanding English 1110 Project  (Honorable Mention)
Recognizes the work of students who embrace the goals and commitments of English 1110:  asking compelling questions; connecting those questions to scholarly, societal, and cultural conversations; and making effective rhetorical choices while composing accessible print and multimodal texts, all with the goal of becoming a member of and contributing to a research community. 

KINSEY BARROWS | Joseph V. Denney Award for an Outstanding Senior English Major (Nominee)
This award, the most prestigious offered by the Department of English, goes to the most outstanding graduating English major.

EDDIE BAUTISTA-GARCIA | Reba Elaine Pearl Burkhardt Roorbach Award in Creative Nonfiction
For the best essay or nonfiction book chapter by an undergraduate student.

MADDIE BETTS | Robert E. Reiter Prize for Critical Analysis
Recognizes the finest critical and scholarly writing by an undergraduate enrolled in an upper-level Department of English course.

MADDIE BETTS | Genevieve M. Critel Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Composition
Honors outstanding writers and the compositions they create within English classes at Ohio State. Named posthumously for Dr. Genevieve Critel, whose dedication to undergraduate education and writing instruction was the basis for her scholarship and teaching

MADDE BETTS | Digital Media Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Work
Recognizes outstanding student digital media project(s) completed in an undergraduate course in the Department of English.

MADDIE BETTS | Citino Poetry Award (2nd Place Undergraduate)
For the best groups of poems by an English major and and by an MFA student in creative writing, not to exceed 10 pages. First and second places awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students.

LIBBY BLACKSHIRE | Joseph V. Denney Award for an Outstanding Senior English Major (Nominee)
This award, the most prestigious offered by the Department of English, goes to the most outstanding graduating English major.

EMILY BURNHEIMER | Minor in Professional Writing Unpaid Internship Grant
Supports an MPW student intern in committing fully to the writing internship instead of overcommitting to the internship alongside paid work as well as a full courseload.

ISABELLA CARMICHAEL | WIL-E Prize for Outstanding English 1110 Project  (Honorable Mention)
Recognizes the work of students who embrace the goals and commitments of English 1110:  asking compelling questions; connecting those questions to scholarly, societal, and cultural conversations; and making effective rhetorical choices while composing accessible print and multimodal texts, all with the goal of becoming a member of and contributing to a research community. 

MADINA DAVLATBOYEVA | Virginia Hull Diversity and Inclusion Award
Recognizes excellence in an English major from an under-represented Ohio State student population.

OLIVIA DEARTH | English Prize for Best Scholarship on Social Justice (Honorable Mention)
For the best academic paper or multimodal project produced in a Department of English undergraduate course in the past year. Submissions should demonstrate a critical engagement with issues of diversity, justice, and/or equity in their study of literature, rhetoric, narrative, or folklore. 

JANE DIMEL | Kitty O. Locker Undergraduate Professional Writing Contest (1st Place)
For demonstrating excellence in professional writing produced in English 3304. 

DEVIN EDWARDS | Chen Ya and Siuha Anita Liu Award for Professional Writing
Awarded to an undergraduate student and intended to be used for the improvement of their professional writing abilities. Candidates must be majoring in any science, technology or engineering discipline and minoring in professional writing in the Department of English.

LIZZIE EIDT | Minor in Professional Writing Unpaid Internship Grant
Supports an MPW student intern in committing fully to the writing internship instead of overcommitting to the internship alongside paid work as well as a full courseload.

KAYLEE FARR | Gertrude Lucille Robinson Award (3rd Place)
Honors the best piece of creative writing (any genre) by an undergraduate

SARAH GARFINKEL | Rosemarie Sena Scholarship for Excellence in English Studies
Recognizes and encourages excellence in English studies at the undergraduate level. It is awarded to a student who shows tremendous potential as an English major.

KATHERINE HAYEK | Minor in Professional Writing Unpaid Internship Grant
Supports an MPW student intern in committing fully to the writing internship instead of overcommitting to the internship alongside paid work as well as a full courseload.

KATHERINE HAYEK | Kitty O. Locker Undergraduate Professional Writing Contest (2nd Place)
For demonstrating excellence in professional writing produced in English 3304.

WONJOO LEE | English Prize for Best Scholarship on Social Justice

Named in honor of Ohio State Emeritus English Professor David Frantz, this award recognizes the most outstanding thesis completed by an English major during the previous three semesters.

This award, the most prestigious offered by the Department of English, goes to the most outstanding graduating English major.

FINLEY VOSS | Digital Media Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Work
