As the Autumn 2026 semester begins, the Department of English would like to introduce our newest hires.
Tenure Track Faculty
Ben Markey is an assistant professor who teaches and researches technical and professional writing using quantitative methods drawn from corpus linguistics, statistics, and machine learning. Of late, this work involves building corpora to explore the subtle linguistic and rhetorical distinctions between AI and human texts, in the hopes that findings can inform writing pedagogy and curriculum design.

Macie Smith is a second-year dual English and philosophy, politics, and economics major. She specializes in creative writing with certificates in the Dean’s Leadership Academy and civil discourse for citizenship. She hopes to pursue a career in publishing after graduation while continuing her work in social advocacy. Macie is also a member of the Undergraduate Student Government, Undergraduate Law Review, and Women's Rugby Club.
Zoe Bourdo is a second-year English major minoring in history. After achieving her bachelor’s degree, she plans to continue her education in graduate school. On campus, Zoe is involved in the Second-Year Transformational Experience Program (STEP), and she is also a Humanities Scholar.
Madeleine Carpenter is pursuing an Integrated Major in Mathematics and English.
Vincent DePaul is a third-year writing, rhetoric, and literacy student. He hopes to have a career in tech writing in the future with time for acting and writing on the side. Outside of his studies, Vincent likes to paint and write, as well as enjoy the outdoors, read, play piano and games, and exercise. Originally from California, Vincent began teaching children about Python and HTML systems before moving to Ohio for college.
Maddie Sackenheim is an English major.
Digital Media Project
Bishnu Roy is a PhD student in English specializing in writing, rhetoric, and literacy. His research interests include posthuman rhetoric and composition, digital media studies, materiality, writing pedagogy, and social justice. He holds an MA in English, Rhetoric and Composition, from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where his thesis examined plagiarism policy as an institutional apparatus shaping student authorship and subjectivity. He also holds BA and MA degrees in English from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Lauren Pennington is a second-year strategic communications major with a minor in video arts who expects to graduate in the spring of 2028. Outside of her academics, Lauren loves creating art with all sorts of different mediums, as well as reading, seeing animals, and hanging out with her friends.
Communications Team
Chelsea Spaugy is a fourth-year student pursuing a degree in English literature with minors in creative writing and media in society. Chelsea is also a member of the International Affairs Scholars program on campus.
Hannah Millikan is a second-year agricultural communications student with a minor in legal foundations of society. After graduation, she plans to attend law school. On campus, Hannah is part of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Living-Learning Community.
