Submissions open for Women of Ohio: Poetry and Art Competitions

The Department of English is thrilled to announce the launch of Senior Lecturer Zoë Brigley’s project: Women of Ohio: Poetry and Art Competitions Celebrate Trailblazing Women in Ohio History.
The Women of Ohio project invites the public to celebrate the legacy of Ohio’s remarkable women through poetry and visual art. This community initiative will showcase original works by local writers and artists that honor both iconic and lesser-known Ohio women who have shaped history. This project was made possible through the support of the Greater Columbus Arts Council, who awarded Brigley a $10,000 Artist Projects Grant last year.
Submissions are welcome from Ohio residents of all genders aged 16 and older in poetry and visual art. All work should creatively highlight the cultural or historical significance of an Ohio woman, whether widely recognized or personally meaningful. The competition closes May 18th, 2025, and will be judged by Brigley for their originality, creative expression, and relevance to the theme. Winners will be honored with cash prizes, with 1st prize winning $200, 2nd Prize winning $100, 3rd Prize winning $50 and 4th prize winning $50. A list of notable Ohio women is available on the project’s website, though participants are encouraged to explore underrepresented voices. Selected submissions will also be showcased as part in events celebrating Ohio’s legacy of female leadership, artistry, and engagement.
Brigley encourages poets and artists to “think of celebrated figures like artist Aminah Robinson, architect Maya Lin, novelist Toni Morrison, and sharpshooter Annie Oakley. We have some incredible women right here from Ohio. There are famous figures as well as everyday heroes such as teachers and mentors, the project aims to reflect the impact of Ohio women past and present.”
