In this workshop designed specifically for English majors and minors, students will learn about the process of looking for career opportunities. We will begin by covering some initial steps of learning about career options, like informational interviews and career counseling. Then, we will discuss different methods and modes for job/internship searching, including Ohio State resources, external resources, and networking. Finally, we will discuss other important aspects of job/internship searches, including timing a search, what kind of skills employers want, and how to best prepare for the search.
The workshop will focus specifically on job searching in areas of interest for humanities majors and how English majors can best position themselves for job and internship searches. Since humanities majors end up working in many different fields, this workshop will be interactive, helping each student consider their own specific career goals.
At the end of this workshop, students will be able to:
- Articulate the goals of an informational interview and how to frame a request for one
- Identify at least two places to search for job/internships in a career field of interest
- Distinguish common missteps in job/internship searches
- Recognize key elements of job ads
- Use skills developed in their English major/minor to help with a job search
Refreshments will be served!
