The Department of English congratulates Keira Hambrick on placing first in the Hayes Forum Humanities Oral division!

The Hayes Forum is an opportunity for graduate students at The Ohio State University to present their research and connect with peers, faculty, staff and the public. The annual forum encourages students enrolled in any area of graduate study to participate

Keira Hambrick

Hambrick presented her research from her dissertation titled “Prior Knowledge and Transfer of Learning in First Year Composition (FYC).” She is passionate about her investigations, and emphasized that her work explains “the need for FYC pedagogy—which affects up to 3 million first-time students each year—to account for students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds as resources that shape their writing experiences.” Earlier this year, Hambrick’s dissertation was also selected for the 2022 Summer Seminar for Composition and Research.

“Participating in the Forum was a rewarding experience. I enjoyed learning about so many other fantastic graduate students’ projects, and getting the opportunity to talk about my dissertation work to a broad audience was great practice for the job market,” Hambrick described.

This summer, Hambrick will be starting her tenure as a Presidential Fellow. This position will “allow [Hambrick] to focus full-time on the dissertation and going on the job market.”

Congratulations again to Keira Hambrick for her outstanding achievements!
