Earlier this week, Assistant Professor Amrita Dhar was named the 2019 recipient of the Milton Society of America’s Albert C. Labriola award. The award recognizes a distinguished article written by a graduate student about John Milton that was published or is forthcoming in a journal or multi-author essay collection.

The article for which Dhar earned this recognition is entitled, “Toward Blind Language: John Milton Writing, 1648-1656.” Dhar was still a graduate student at the University of Michigan when she completed the essay, as well as when it was accepted for publication in Milton Studies, the premier academic journal for Milton scholarship. When the essay appeared in print in autumn of 2018, Dhar was in her first semester serving as an assistant professor at The Ohio State University Newark campus. Reflecting on her journey to publication, Dhar describes her essay as “a lovely 'bridge' publication between [her] two institutions.”

The Milton Society of America encourages the advancement of scholarship regarding John Milton, the Renaissance author most well known for his 1667 epic poem Paradise Lost. The Society unites Milton scholars from around the world and promotes scholarly collaboration via an annual dinner, the recognition of outstanding scholarship, and the publication of a monthly newsletter and a yearly booklet.

The next Milton Society of America annual dinner, at which Dhar will accept the Albert C. Labriola award, will be held in Philadelphia in April 2020, during the Renaissance Society of America Annual Meeting. Dhar is scheduled to present at the conference, as well.
