Dear Alumni and Friends,
The beginning of the academic year always brings energy and excitement to the Department of English, as we return to the regular rhythms of classes, meetings and research. This year we were able to have our first fully-in person graduate orientation and pre-semester trainings since 2019 and to gather together as a department for a lunch the week before classes started. These gatherings gave us a good opportunity to welcome new and returning students and faculty and catch up with colleagues. As you will see in the articles below, over the summer department members fanned out locally, nationally and internationally to make presentations; lead programs and productions; pursue fellowships; attend workshops and courses; and conduct research. Their experiences, some of which were supported by donations to English giving funds, enhance professional development and create exciting learning opportunities.
Over the summer, I was also thrilled to learn that Aimee Nezhukumatathil (’96 BA and ’00 MFA) received a 2022 Alumni Medalist Award from the Ohio State University Alumni Association. Congratulations to Aimee! You can read an interview with her in this newsletter.
I also hope to see some of you at the College of Arts and Sciences Homecoming Tailgate on October 1! If you are on campus earlier that week and have time to meet, please let me know; I would love to connect with you. You can let us know what you have been up to by filling out this Alumni Profile form.
Thank you for your interest in English at Ohio State. At a time when many of us are “surrounded by circle upon circle of consternations and affrights,” as Herman Melville put it in Moby-Dick, we continue to provide our students the opportunity to “freely and fearlessly indulge in all peaceful concernments” and even, at times, to “revel” in “delight.” Your support and encouragement are vital to our ability to provide moments of delight as well as challenge, and we are grateful.
