Popular Culture Studies Minor

The Popular Culture Studies Minor is for students interested in developing an interdisciplinary approach to the study of popular culture. Many of the courses that fulfill the minor requirements may also be used to fulfill the university's General Education requirements. Overlap of courses between minor and General Education requirements is permitted by the university.

Requirements

  • The Popular Culture Studies minor requires the completion of 15 hours, which consists of an introductory course; at least one course involving the study of a historical popular culture (pre-1945); at least one course focusing on a popular culture outside majority-U.S. culture; and no more than two film courses.
  • Not including the required introductory course, no more than two courses may be taken at the 2000-level.
  • No more than two courses to be counted for the minor may be taken from a single department.

Credit hours required

A minimum of 15 credit hrs.1000 level courses shall not be counted in the minor. At least 6 credit hours must be 3000-level courses or above.

Transfer and EM credit hours allowed

A student is permitted to count up to 6 total hours of transfer credit and/or credit by examination.

Overlap with the GE

A student is permitted to overlap up to 6 credit hours between the GE and the minor.

Overlap with the major and additional minor(s)

The minor must be in a different subject than the major. The minor must contain a minimum of 12 hours distinct from the major and/or additional minor(s).

Grades required

  • Minimum C- for a course to be counted on the minor.
  • Minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA for all minor course work.
  • Course work graded Pass/Non-Pass cannot count on the minor.
  • No more than 3 credit hours of course work graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory may count toward the minor.

No more than 3 credit hours.

Minor approval

The minor is complete if a student takes the above coursework and meets the requirements on this sheet. Meeting with an advisor in the academic unit offering the minor is not required.

Filling the minor program form

No minor program form is required if the student meets the requirements listed on this sheet.

Changing the minor

Any variation from the program described on this sheet requires the approval of the Minor Program Coordinator listed above.
