Professor Sebastian Knowles Appointed Chair of Department of English

The faculty staff and students of the Department of English have been informed of the appointment of Professor Sebastian D.G. Knowles as the next Chair of the Department, pending approval by the Board of Trustees. In his memo announcing the appointment, Dean Mark Shanda, Divisional Dean, Arts and Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences  described it as one which "will yield nothing but great advances for the Department of English." Professor Knowles is currently Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences. He is the author of A Purgatorial Flame: Seven British Writers in the Second World War (1990) and The Dublin Helix: The Life of Language in Joyce's Ulysses (2001), which was awarded the Michael J. Durkan Prize in 2001. Professor Knowles has been the recipient of the Arts & Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award (2000), English Graduate Professor of the Year (2000), College of Humanities Rodica C. Botoman Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching and Mentoring (2003),  Arts Professor of the Year, University of Antwerp (2005), and the English Undergraduate Professor of the Year (2007).
