Workshop with Michael Gavin: Building Custom GPTs for Teaching and Research

Michael Gavin
Tue, March 24, 2026
11:00 am - 12:30 pm
311 Denney Hall

Please join Michael Gavin, Associate Professor of English at the University of South Carolina, OSU alum, and a digital humanist working at the intersection of linguistics, computation, and cultural theory for this hands-on workshop that will show you how to design domain-specific AI assistants that use curated datasets, reference materials, and controlled instructions.

Participants will learn how to build a custom tutor app to guide students through readings, assignments, and comprehension checks, as well as a research assistant optimized for literature review, writing, and project management. The session emphasizes both the technical workflow and the pedagogical logic behind responsible AI integration, demonstrating how custom GPTs can transform supplemental instruction and scholarly research. No technical skills are required, but participants will need a ChatGPT account.

Co-sponsored by the Department of English and Global Arts + Humanities. Lunch will be provided, but please RSVP if you plan to attend.
