Join the Department of English Visiting Writers Series for a reading and Q&A with poet and alumna Yona Harvey.

Yona Harvey is the author of the poetry collections You Don’t Have to Go to Mars for Love, which won the Believer Book Award for Poetry, and Hemming the Water, which won the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. She co-wrote Marvel’s World of Wakanda with Roxane Gay, as well as Black Panther & the Crew with Ta-Nehisi Coates. Yona has worked with teenagers writing about mental health issues in collaboration with Creative Nonfiction magazine, and she is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow. She graduated from the Ohio State University’s MFA in Creative Writing Program in 2001.

You Don't Have to Go to Mars for Love follows an unnamed protagonist on her multidimensional, afro-futuristic journey. The poems in this collection stretch the boundaries normally constraining a Black female body, providing an alternate psychic space of community and empowerment.

This reading is free and open to the public. Q&A and book signing to follow. Books will be available for sale from Barnes and Noble.
