Please join the Department of English Visiting Writers Series for a reading and Q&A with poet and translator Cindy Juyoung Ok. Ok is the author of Ward Toward and the translator of The Hell of That Star by Kim Hyesoon. A former high school physics teacher, she is an assistant English professor at the University of California Davis.

In Ward Toward, Ok uses visual play in invented forms to counter familiar narratives about mental illness, abuse, and death, positing that it is not a person’s character or will that makes survival possible, but luck, and other people. Ward Toward is a winner of the Balcones Poetry Prize and a California Book Award Silver Medal, as well as a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize, the Maya Angelou Book Award, and the Ohio Book Award.

This reading is free and open to the public, and it will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Books will be available for sale from Prologue Bookshop.
