2012-01-06 16:30:00 2012-01-06 18:30:00 Grad Sem: Literacy, Region and Mapping: Appalachia and Beyond  The GradSem meeting on January 6 focuses on the relationship of literacy to ideas about and approaches to region-based research.  Organized and moderated by KRISTA BRYSON and CASSIE PATTERSON, co-chairs of the new Literacy in Appalachia GradGroup, the program will feature presentations by students whose research projects are grounded in Appalachia: JUSTIN ACOME (Political Science), on Bluegrass and Boundaries, Politics and Race; CHRISTINE BIERMANN (Geography), on Ecological Restoration and Narratives of Appalachian Identity and Change; ELLA SMITH (Teaching and Learning), on Global Literacy through Foreign Language Education in Appalachian Colleges.Lunch will be served.For more information or to register, email Krista Bryson at bryson.53@osu.edu.________________________________________________________Cross- and interdisciplinary activities and relationships play important roles in the experiences of students whose research interests and professional goals involve literacy. The Graduate Interdisciplinary Seminar in Literacy Studies (or GradSem) formed in 2005 to meet this objective. The group includes students at every stage of study from across the University. They meet monthly on the first Friday (11:30-1:00) at the Humanities Institute, 104 East 15th Avenue, for lunch and a program.
