Elizabeth Renker (Professor): Areas of scholarship include American literature to 1910, American poetry to 1910, American social and cultural history, the history of the profession, the history of higher education, Herman Melville, Sarah Piatt. Author of THE ORIGINS OF AMERICAN LITERATURE STUDIES: AN INSTITUTIONAL HISTORY (Cambridge UP, 2007); STRIKE THROUGH THE MASK: HERMAN MELVILLE AND THE SCENE OF WRITING (Johns Hopkins UP, 1996); and the introduction to the Signet Classic edition of MOBY-DICK (1998), as well as an array of articles on American literary history. A work in progress, THE LOST ERA IN AMERICAN POETRY, reassesses the history of American poetry between 1870 and 1910. Recipient of the Rodica C. Botoman Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching and Mentoring (2006) and of the Ohio State University Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching (2008).
