Ryan Friedman (B.A. University of Notre Dame, Ph.D. Northwestern University) teaches courses in American film, film theory, and American and African American literature. He has also held teaching appointments at Rice University and at Northwestern University. Currently, he is at work on a manuscript entitled Negro Talking Pictures: African American Films and the Transition to Sound. His article, "'Between Absorption and Extinction': Charles Chesnutt and Biopolitical Racism," appears in the Winter 2007 issue of Arizona Quarterly. He has two articles forthcoming: "'Enough Force To Shatter the Tale to Fragments': Ethics and Textual Analysis in James Baldwin's Film Theory" in English Literary History; and "'A Moving-Picture of Democracy': President Obama and African American Film History Beyond the Mirror Screen" in Quarterly Review of Film & Video.
