Humanities & the Arts Career Roundtable

Study Abroad
September 1, 2016
All Day
MLK Jr. Lounge

How should students pursue international and humanities-based careers? What are the best strategies for leveraging language-based skills in a job interview? How can faculty and staff counter myths of job insecurity in the humanities and the arts?

We are excited to announce the first Mobile Coffee Session of the academic year, hosted by the Area Studies Centers of the Office of International Affairs, in conjunction with the Humanities and the Arts Discovery Theme. The Humanities & the Arts Career Roundtable mobile coffee session will focus on the strengths of humanities degrees for preparing for success in the job market.

Open to all students, faculty, and staff, this event will be held on Thursday, September 1st in the MLK Jr. Lounge (Room TBD) at 4:00 p.m.

The forum will be led by Harvey J. Graff, Ohio Eminent Scholar in Literacy Studies & Professor of English and History, as well as the Director of LiteracyStudies@OSU.  Representatives from International Affairs and Career services will provide specific guidance and resources for how to pursue internationally focused careers, in a variety of fields, not just humanities fields. The forum will begin with insights on how to leverage your strengths in the humanities, following with recent Ohio State graduates sharing their personal experiences.

Discussion topics will include:

  • The ability and confidence to ask the right questions on the job
  • Being a problem-solver in complex global work environments
  • How the humanities can prepare you to begin your career
  • Combining the right abilities and skills from your degree and international experience.
  • OK, I’ve gone abroad, now what do I do? What abilities gained translate to the resume?
  • I don’t speak a foreign language – is it too late for me to think about international work?
  • How does global competency become competence in conjunction with diversity in the workplace?
