Hillary Degner is a PhD student studying rhetoric, composition, and literacy. She is also interested in disability studies and writing center studies. Degner has five years of writing center tutor experience at two different universities. She was also the technical writer for Saginaw Valley State University’s Writing Center for three years and was a first-year writing instructor at Eastern Michigan University for two years. Currently, Degner’s main research interest is mental health in academia. Specifically, she is interested in how institutions can do more to support undergraduate student, graduate student, staff and faculty mental health. Her master’s project was an IRB-approved study that sought to learn more about undergraduate student mental health, how mental health impacts students in a first-year writing classroom, and how instructors can use writing and mindfulness activities to help support student mental health.
