Students Entering With MA

Under semesters, a minimum total of 86 credit hours will be required to earn the Ph.D.

Students who enter the program with a B.A. will earn a minimum total of 36 credit hours to receive an M.A. along the way.  These 36 hours count toward the minimum total required for the Ph.D.

Students who enter with an M.A. from another program or another institution will typically transfer 30 hours, which means they will typically need to earn a minimum of an additional 56 credit hours for the Ph.D.


Course Requirements beyond the M.A.

  • 4 additional graduate-level courses taken for letter grades (12 credit hours). If not met during the M.A., these can include:

English 6700: Introduction to Graduate Study in English (3 credits)     
Critical Theory Requirement (3 credits)
Breadth Requirement #1 (3 credits)
Breadth Requirement #2 (3 credits)

  • 2 additional graduate-level courses taken for S/U grades (6 credit hours). These caninclude:

English 6781: Introduction to the Teaching of First-Year English (3 credits)
English 8903: Teaching College English (3 credits, repeatable)
English 8996: Research in English: Candidacy Exam (variable credit hours)
English 8999: Research in English: Dissertation (variable credit hours)

  • 2 Graduate Workshops (fulfilled by the end of year four):

English 8193: Graduate Workshop (1 credit, repeatable)

*Note: Courses chosen to satisfy the Critical Theory and Breadth Requirements will be determined by students' specific areas of focus, aligned with their research and teaching interests, and selected in consultation with a faculty advisor.  The courses which count for the Critical Theory requirement are listed on the Coursework page. Courses taken at another institution to fulfill the M.A. can be counted toward these requirements.


Additional Requirements for the Ph.D.

Students entering the program with an M.A. from another program or another institution will need to complete by the Spring Semester of their first year: 

  1. Preliminary Program of Study
  2. Portfolio Project
  3. Advising Meeting

All Ph.D. students who finish their required coursework will then need to complete:

  1. Final Program of Study
  2. Competency in one language other than English (must be demonstrated prior to Candidacy)
  3. Candidacy Exam
  4. Final Dissertation Prospectus
  5. Dissertation
  6. Final Oral Examination (Dissertation Defense)
