Under semesters, a minimum total of 86 credit hours will be required to earn the Ph.D.
Students who enter the program with a B.A. will earn a minimum total of 36 credit hours to receive an M.A. along the way. These 36 hours count toward the minimum total required for the Ph.D.
Students who enter with an M.A. from another program or another institution will typically transfer 30 hours, which means they will typically need to earn a minimum of an additional 56 credit hours for the Ph.D.

English 8996: Research in English: Candidacy Exam (variable credit hours)
English 8999: Research in English: Dissertation (variable credit hours)
- 2 Graduate Workshops (fulfilled by the end of year four):
English 8193: Graduate Workshop (1 credit, repeatable)
*Note: Courses chosen to satisfy the Critical Theory and Breadth Requirements will be determined by students' specific areas of focus, aligned with their research and teaching interests, and selected in consultation with a faculty advisor. The courses which count for the Critical Theory requirement are listed on the Coursework page. Courses taken at another institution to fulfill the M.A. can be counted toward these requirements.
