On the evening of July 20, 2018, comic scholars, artists and fans from around the world gathered at San Diego Comic-Con to attend the 2018 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. Arts and Humanities Distinguished Professor Frederick Luis Aldama took home this “Oscar of the comic book world” for his book, Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics (2017, University of Arizona Press), which was nominated in the category of Best Academic/Scholarly Work.
Along with Aldama, Jared Gardner, fellow professor of English and director of the Popular Culture Studies Program, was nominated in the category of Best Academic/Scholarly work. Gardner received the nomination for The Comics of Charles Schulz: The Good Grief of Modern Life (2017, University of Mississippi Press), a collection of essays he edited with Ian Gordon of the National University of Singapore. This marks Gardner’s fourth time of being nominated for an Eisner.
