Awards and Scholarships

New Deadline for All Awards: 10:00 AM, Monday, February 18, 2013
Each year, the Department of English's Committee on Undergraduate Studies solicits applications and nominations for five undergraduate awards. These awards are designed to recognize students who have demonstrated excellence in their English coursework and scholarly pursuits during the current academic year. Applications and nominations are solicited during January and early February, and the winners are announced during the department's Annual Awards Ceremony in late April. All of the awards come with a $500 tuition scholarship and recognition on the department website.
Application-Based Awards
The Helen Morrison Earnhart Harley Scholarship in English
Deadline EXTENDED: 10 am, February 18, 2013
This award is designed to recognize and encourage excellence in English studies. To be eligible for this award, the applicant must (1) have graduated from a high school located in Ohio’s Franklin County and (2) be pursuing an undergraduate degree in English at Ohio State. The recipient of this award will receive an invitation to the English Department’s annual awards ceremony and a $500 tuition scholarship.
Submissions should include a completed application form, a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, and a signature releasing a copy of your transcript to the awards committee. See the application form for further information on these requirements.

The Rosemarie Sena Scholarship in English
Deadline EXTENDED: 10 am, February 18, 2013
This award is designed to recognize and encourage excellence in English studies. To be eligible for this award, the applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in English at Ohio State. The recipient of this award will receive an invitation to the English Department’s annual awards ceremony and a $500 tuition scholarship.

Application Form for Rosemarie Sena Scholarship
The Robert E. Reiter Prize for Critical Analysis
Deadline EXTENDED: 10 am, Februry 18, 2013
This award is designed to recognize critical/scholarly writing at the undergraduate level. To be eligible for this award, the applicant (1) must be/have been an undergraduate student at Ohio State (open to all undergraduates, regardless of major, and also to recent graduates) and (2) must be prepared to submit a critical/scholarly essay completed in an English course offered during Spring 2012, Summer 2012, or Fall 2012 (essays written as part of other courses or in earlier terms will not be considered). The recipient of this award will receive an invitation to the English Department’s annual awards ceremony and a $500 honorarium.
Submissions should include a completed application form and a clean copy of your critical/scholarly essay written as part of an English course taken during Spring 2012, Summer 2012, or Fall 2012. Note that a recent graduate can submit a paper for consideration for this award provided the paper was written during the terms noted here.

Nomination-Based Awards
The Denney Award
Note: Faculty submit nomination letters on behalf of their most outstanding students. Nomination deadline EXTENDED: 10 am, February 18, 2013
The Denney Award goes to the English Department's outstanding senior English major and receives an invitation to the English Department’s annual awards ceremony, a $500 honorarium, a small personal plaque, and recognition on a large plaque hanging in 421 Denney Hall.
The Thesis Award
Note: The Awards Committee will pull from the Knowledge Bank database all theses submitted from the the previous year.
This award recognizes the best undergraduate thesis, as determined the English Department Awards Committee. The recipient receives an invitation to the English Department’s annual awards ceremony and a $500 honorarium.
