Resources: Literary Locations

Winter 2010, English 595: Literary London

Program

This Literary Locations program offers an expedition through the towers, domes, theaters, and temples of London through the eyes of England's most famous writers. We will examine the hustle and bustle of Shakespeare's theatrical world on the South Bank of London, with its fishwives and seamstresses gathering to watch performances about kings and commoners, and explore how this burgeoning center of culture and commerce came to be seen as the modern metropolis that T.S. Eliot describes as an "unreal city." Readings will focus on the poetics of place and space that produce a literary sense of London, as well as on the capital city's relationship to other English locations. At the conclusion of winter quarter, the classroom will shift to the actual locations about which we have read: London, Bath, and Stratford-Upon-Avon. We will walk across Westminster Bridge with Wordsworth and view the reconstruction of the Globe Theater where Shakespeare's plays were performed. Then we will stop in Bath, the city at the heart of Austen's Persuasion, and Tintern Abbey on our way up to Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. Come learn why Samuel Jonson said that "when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life."
