Undergraduate Information
English Undergraduate Organization (EUGO)
The English Undergraduate Organization, or EUGO, sponsors social and academic activities such as career information sessions, lectures, readings, biweekly meetings, movie nights, trips to the theater, and the quarterly schedulathon, where the next quarter’s course offerings are discussed and reviewed. Any undergraduate who has declared an English major is automatically a member.EUGO holds elections in Spring to elect its governing officers. A central function of EUGO is to represent undergraduate interests in departmental decisions. Undergraduates serve alongside faculty and graduate student representatives on several committees as full voting members. They also select the winners for some undergraduate awards.
Constitution
Article I: Name
The name of the organization is the English Undergraduate Organization (EUGO).Article II: Purpose
The purpose of the English Undergraduate Organization is to provide a forum for interaction between faculty and students in the Department of English, in a positive environment for growth and learning.Article III: Membership
Membership is open to all declared English majors at all campuses of the Ohio State University. Membership is free. This organization and its members shall not discriminate against any individual or individuals for reasons of race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, sex, age, handicap, or Vietnam-era veteran status.Article IV: Officers
Section 1: Officers serving as the Executive Board shall be the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The duties of the Executive Board are as follows:- to solicit and review submissions of undergraduate presentations for the annual English Undergraduate Research Forum, and to solicit and review submissions for the Reiter prize for the best undergraduate essay;
- to select winners of the faculty undergraduate teaching award and the graduate teaching assistant teaching award;
- 3) to seat undergraduates on the Department’s Executive Committee, the English Department Council, and the Undergraduate Studies Committee;
- 4) to advocate the concerns of undergraduate English majors, including curriculum development, and to plan trips, meetings, and events of interest to the various groups within the major; and
- 5) to work towards the purpose of the constitution as stated in Article II.
Section 3: Executive Board members must be in good standing with the institution
Section 4: The Adviser shall be the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of English. The Adviser has no vote in the organization. The duties of the Adviser are as follows:
- to assist EUGO in preparing the annual English Undergraduate Research Forum, and other academic activities of the organization;
- to coordinate EUGO’s meetings on various subjects with different groups within the major (such as pre-Education majors, Honors majors, questions about career development, major advising, diversity issues);
- to provide staff support for promotion of all EUGO events, both social and academic;
- to oversee the appropriate use of operating, travel, and activity funds;
- to advocate the concerns of undergraduate English majors, including curriculum development; and
- to work towards the purpose of the constitution as stated in Article II.
Article V: Election of Officers
Section 1: Election of officers will occur at the second meeting in April.Section 2: Each member in attendance at the election meeting shall be accorded one vote per office.
Section 3: All elections will be held by secret ballot.
Section 4: A simple majority vote will constitute an officer election.
Article VI: Meetings
Section 1: All meetings will be held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Undergraduate Lounge (Denney 449).Section 2: All members must attend a majority of the meetings held during the year to be eligible to vote at officer elections.
Section 3: The rules contained in Robert’s Rule of Order shall govern the organization in all cases to which they are applicable, and in which they are not inconsistent with the constitution of this organization.
