Concentrations in the English Major
English majors can achieve depth of training in English literature or language studies by concentrating their upper-level coursework in strategic ways. Although not a requirement for either the regular or the honors English major, a course concentration can help prepare students for success in graduate school and career development, and can be invaluable to students who choose to write undergraduate research theses. The following list is a general guideline, not exhaustive of all possible concentration areas. Moreover, the list may not include all course numbers that could apply to any given concentration. Students should review quarterly course descriptions on the English Department's website to plan the most meaningful program for their purposes. Students who wish to pursue a concentration not indicated on this page should speak with their major advisor to develop a program of study that best meets their specific interests.
Concentration courses can overlap with required upper-level categories within the major (i.e., pre-1800 literature, pre-1900 literature, post-1900 literature, and non-literature).
