Creative Writing Program

Duties for the first position include work with MFA recruitment, advertising and publicity, the Visiting Writers Program, and the student/faculty reading series. Graduate Media Associate
One position at 25% (10 hours per week) for 3 quarters (Au/Wi/Sp). The Media Associate will be responsible for creating rich content (mostly print, but also image, sound, and video) for the "News" and "Events" parts of the front page of the Department's web site; will attend events, conduct interviews, gather materials, and compose short feature stories to promote the Department to a variety of OSU and non-OSU communities; will report to the Chair of the Technology Committee (Les Tannenbaum) and the Director of the Digital Media Project (Scott DeWitt) and will have full access to the Digital Media Project and its staff, including training on digital media technologies. Strong journalistic writing and editing skills required. One position at 25% for 3 quarters (Au/Wi/Sp); possible 25% position for summer. Troubleshoots basic hardware, software, and network problems for the Department and the Digital Media Project. Conducts inventory of Department computers and manages recycling of computers: re-images and installs "recyclable" machines (i.e., four-year-old machines that have been replaced by new ones), and prepares obsolete machines for University surplus. Qualifications: knowledge of Windows and Mac machines and platforms, including hardware, operating systems, and software (XP/OSX, Office, Macromedia Dreamweaver, email clients); experience with basic web upgrade and maintenance; ability to consult effectively with clients; Department/DMP liaison with OIT and HIS. One position at 25% for 3 quarters (Au/Wi/Sp).Duties: helps answer queries from students, administrators, and community about the undergraduate minor in disability studies and the graduate interdisciplinary specialization (GIS) in disability studies; prepares presentations, publications, and other program materials; organizes quarterly steering committee meetings (setting them up, keeping notes); assists with arrangements for visiting scholars and workshop leaders; assists in grant-writing for the program; serves on university-wide disability studies minor (undergraduate and graduate) committee alongside faculty and administrators from 9 other departments.

First-Year Writing Program
Writing Program Administrator (WPA)
Two positions at 50% for 4 quarters (Su-Sp) and 1 position at 25% for 4 quarters (Su-Sp). Appointments begin Summer 2008. Length of appointments: Summer (11 weeks), Autumn (12 weeks), Winter (11 weeks), Spring (11 weeks), 2008-2009.Note: WPAs facilitate the Pre-Quarter Workshop for Professional Development, which runs from September 3-18, 2008. Summer quarter appointments run from July 7-September 18, 2008.
Responsibilities:
WPAs are responsible for significant administrative duties in the First-Year Writing Program (FYWP), including, but not limited to, the following:
- assisting in planning and facilitating the Pre-Quarter Workshop for Staff Development for incoming Graduate Teaching Associates (GTAs)
- assisting in the presentation of Professional Development Forums during Autumn and Winter quarters
- providing on-going support to the FYWP teaching staff by holding regular office hours, conducting and reporting class observations, and developing workshops
- attending weekly FYWP staff meetings
- developing and revising program documents for 110.01 and 110.02
- composing correspondence related to the FYWP
- undertaking special projects initiated by the FYWP (e.g., publications, grants, outreach)
- at least three quarters' experience teaching writing in the Department of English
- strong interest in pedagogy
- administrative skills, including ability to manage numerous projects/tasks at the same time
- leadership ability
- aptitude in managing small groups, experience conducting training programs, and/or professional writing or publishing experience desired
- knowledge of Carmen and a comfort with technology and teaching in a computer classroom preferred

Peer Mentor
This year, we are restructuring the Peer Mentor program. In place of the weekly meetings with new GTAs, the Peer Mentors will conduct a series of workshops for new GTAs. These workshops will provide opportunities for experienced instructors to share their teaching strengths with new GTAs in a friendly, informal, yet structured environment.5 positions: 25% appointment for 1 quarter
Length of appointment: Autumn, 2007
Note. Peer mentors will also need to be available during the pre-quarter workshop, which runs from August 27-September 13, 2007.
Interviews will be conducted and positions filled during spring quarter.
Responsibilities:- conducting workshops twice a week for five weeks with groups of new GTAs.
- attending bi-weekly meetings with the Associate Director of First-Year Writing to plan peer group activities and discuss matters of interest to Peer Mentors and GTAs.
- attending a Peer Mentor Training workshop on August 29th
- assisting new GTAs with the development of syllabi, class materials, classroom activities, etc.
- observing the classroom teaching of new GTAs
- at least three quarters' experience teaching writing in the Department of English at Ohio State, preferably under the new curriculum
- skill in working with small groups
- interest in pedagogy
- leadership ability

Folklore Archives
One position at 25% for 3 quarters (Au/Wi/Sp). Responsibilities include filing and entering computer data for student term papers and working with Center for Folklore Studies staff, faculty, and students on folklore projects. Two positions at 25% for 3 quarters each, one through the Department of English Writing Workshop and the other through the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing; these positions are combined into one 50% position.Duties: manages all aspects of the undergraduate peer tutoring program: coordinates schedules, supervises writing consultants, conducts observations of tutoring sessions, and maintains program records; serves as liaison and resource for English 110.03 and 109 students, 110.03 and 109 instructors, English 467 undergraduate students/tutors, 467 instructors, CSTW, and the Writing Workshop; may work with undergraduate tutors in the Writing Center.
Qualifications: at least one year teaching English 110 and/or completion of English 881.02 required; writing tutor experience strongly recommended; familiarity with the Department of English Writing Workshop and CSTW Writing Center desired.
