About Our Degree Programs

Valerie Lee, Dept. Chair
The OSU English Department offers an M.A. program, an M.F.A. program in Creative Writing, and a Ph.D. program, giving graduate students a variety of opportunities to work closely with distinguished scholars in a number of different fields. From the works of Chaucer to those of Lydia Maria Child, from romanticism to postcolonialism, graduate study at OSU exposes students to the entire range of traditional and non-traditional fields in contemporary English studies, with many of our programs being nationally recognized. In addition, several scholarly journals are produced here at Ohio State, all with the help of advanced graduate students. These include: Studies in the Age of Chaucer, The James Joyce Newsletter, Narrative: The Journal for the International Society for the Study of Narrative, The Journal of Business Communication, as well as The Journal, the Creative Writing program's own publication.

The Department offers extensive opportunities to work closely with scholars on a variety of research topics, as well as outstanding teaching opportunities. Incoming M.A.s teach English 110 and its variants in our First-Year Writing Program, and they receive training and support throughout their career. Some second-year M.A.s and most Ph.D. students will move on to the second level writing course (English 367), and once Ph.D. students complete their exams, they are guaranteed an introductory course in their field. Finally, the Department's Computers in Composition and Literature program offers graduate students the opportunity to use the latest instructional technology to teach both composition and literature courses.
