Students: The Ohio State University Policy for English Composition Placement

In response to a request from the Office of Academic Affairs, The Department of English re-numbered its first-year writing courses. The new system of naming these courses should in the end, help students better understand the different focuses of the array of first-year writing courses and will help students take the most appropriate English courses for their specific needs. This change is in naming only, not in content, in placement, or in requirements. These changes will begin in Autumn 2005.
  • English 110 becomes English 110.01
  • English 110L becomes English 110.02
  • English 110W and 193W become English 110.03 and 193.03.

The course or courses a student takes is determined by a placement formula that uses one or more of the following: college board or AP scores, the number of previous high school or college English composition credits, and writing samples. While some students will submit a writing sample called the English Test before or during Orientation, ALL STUDENTS will write a diagnostic essay to verify placement during the first week of English classes at Ohio State.

For initial placement, there are seven levels illustrated in the following chart:

Placement into one of these seven categories will be determined based on a number of criteria, which are dependent upon your position at the univerity. Select the link that most resembles your circumstance from the list below.

Category I: Students with English ACT or SAT Verbal scores less than 3 years old

Students with valid ACT or SAT scores will be granted initial placement into level 3, 4, or 7, according to the following chart:

18 or below 450 or below 7 English Test Required for placement

Category II: Transfer students without credit for English 110.0x, students 21 years of age or older, or students with SAT or ACT scores over 3 years old

Students who fall into Category II will be granted initial placement into level 0, 4, 5, or 6, according to the following chart:

Students who are 21 years of age or older 0 (Students have option to take the English Test, which will determine placement into level 3, 4, 5, or 6).

If student chooses not to take the English Test, s/he will be placed into level 4 after the orientation session.

Category III: Students with Advanced-Placement Test Scores

Students who receive a 4 or 5 on their Advanced-Placement English Literature and Composition Test may place into level 1 or 2.
