RCL Faculty Profile: Elizabeth Weiser

Elizabeth Weiser. Elizabeth Weiser's forthcoming book, Burke, Words, War, is due out from the University of South Carolina Press in November 2008.  The book addresses Burkean dramatism's role as a specific, literary and linguistic response to war.  Arguing for a "rhetoricized" approach to historiographic research, it attempts to capture the particular conversations from which dramatism arose.

Burke, Words, War aims for a close analysis of the words of Burke and his contemporaries in literary and social criticism, both in their private letters and their published papers, as their debates forged the competing theories of their time, and it aims to discern how the shadow of wartime America fell onto even the most seemingly apolitical of these works, including particularly the theory of dramatism. As Weiser hopes to demonstrate with this historigraphic study, a rhetoricized approach to the analysis of any theory brings not only richer understanding of its timebound historical significance but also richer application of the theory in its timeless, universal context as it continues to inform present-day scholarship.

An article from this book, "Burke and War: Rhetoricizing the Theory of Dramatism," (Rhetoric Review 26.3) was named the Honorable Mention recipient of Rhetoric Review's Theresa J. Enos 25th Anniversary Award for best articles, 2007. Weiser is an Assistant Professor and teaches on the Newark campus.
