First Year Writing Program

Vera Carter Cooley Teaching Award For First-Year Writing

Application materials are due by April 24, 2009 The Vera Carter Cooley Teaching Award grants $200 to an outstanding Graduate Teaching Associate for teaching in the First-Year Writing Program (109.01, 109.02, 110.03, 110.01, or 110.02). GTAs are eligible after their first year teaching in the Department during the 2008-09 academic year.

GTAs may apply by submitting the following materials:
  • A course syllabus.
  • A small selection of course materials--class handouts or assignment prompts.
  • One photocopied set of discursive student evaluations.
  • A one-page (double-spaced) self-reflective summary of these discursive evaluations.
  • A written evaluation of the instructor's teaching from a faculty member, peer mentor, or Writing Program Administrator (these may be on file in the First-Year Writing Program).
  • A cover letter describing the instructor's teaching philosophy, goals, and methods.
The recipient will be chosen by the staff of the First-Year Writing Program, and the award will be presented at the annual English Department Honors Awards ceremony May 20, 2009.

All materials should be submitted to Carolyn Wilkins, Denney Hall 421, by April 24, 2009.
