Format: Group instruction, Web site navigation and classroom discussion; whiteboard, handouts or other instructional mediums are available options
This assignment requires you to work as part of a group to prepare a short lesson involving visual analysis of online marketing and packaging images. For this assignment, you will be taking an instructor role to lead class discussion by asking questions and directing conversation towards in-depth analysis.
Assignment: You will be assigned to a group with four other students to work as a team. Choose an officially licensed Web site for a particular consumer product (ex., www.mountaindew.com) or major retailer (e.g., www.hasbro.com) for in-class analysis. Your task is to lead the class in a 15-20 minute discussion of the Web site, utilizing the analytical frameworks provided by Writing Analytically, as well as the possible application of any of the other relevant readings we’ve discussed thus far. You are finally required to read and apply the article “Designing a Webpage” (Motives for Writing 355), which discusses the marketing and protocol issues involved in a web advertising campaign. Please note that this is not a presentation: Your ultimate goal is to lead an engaged classroom conversation, not to simply report to the class what you think.
Criteria for Evaluation:
In your presentation, your group must:- Demonstrate a familiarity with the Web site and the analytical models at your disposal
- Move from description to analysis
- Anticipate multiple interpretations of the material, and demonstrate strong preparation for the class period
- Use a method or combination of methods from Writing Analytically and/or Motives for Writing
- Engage class discussion by leading conversation and asking questions, rather than simply presenting a report
- With the class, generate ideas about the image(s) and have something to say about it/them--answer "so what?"
- Sustain your discussion for 15-20 minutes
- Give each group member a speaking role
- Be creative! Engage the class!
