Passive and Active Voice Activities

Objective: To help students understand the difference between passive and active voice, and identify the passive voice in their own writing and learn how to correct it.

Step One:
Define the passive and active voices for students and discuss with them the difference between the two and provide examples for each.

Step Two:
As a class, practice turning passive sentences into active sentences.

Step Three:
Have the students review their drafts and underline sentences that that use the passive voice. Then they should work on restructuring those sentences to make them active. Perhaps have some students place examples on the board and go over them as a class.
