Merchants of Cool and The Evolving Thesis


Goals for today’s class: Introduce the concept of the Evolving Thesis; work on mapping an evolving thesis in a text.
Means for accomplishing those goals: Show Merchants of Cool and ask students to track the evolving thesis through that text.
Readings for today: Writing Analytically from Ch. 6 “Making a Thesis Evolve”
Timing:
First Hour:
10 min. ---Lecture and facilitate a large group discussion on the concept of the Evolving Thesis. Discuss the example in Writing Analytically.
5 min. ---Hand out worksheet that tracks the evolving thesis through Merchants of Cool and explain to students that their task while watching the video is to fill in the blanks with complicating evidence and revised theses. ***The worksheet provided below is filled in, studenst shoudl recieve a blank copy.***
60 min. ---Show Merchants of Cool
Second Hour:
20 min. ---Facilitate a large group discussion around the students’ results. Hand out the sheet with the missing information filled in and discuss it as one possible way of mapping the evolving thesis in the film.
