Linking Evidence to Claims
Begin with a discussion of a reading, students pair up and consider the following questions: [15 minutes]
- Highlight Initial Thesis Statement and Key Analytical Claims
- What is the relationship between the analytical claims?
- Do the analytical claims seem to build upon each other? If so, in what ways?
- Do any of the claims seem tangential to the overall argument or purpose of the essay? If so, why might these have been included?
- Are claims linked to evidence? Provide 1-2 examples.
- Has the writer practiced 10 on 1 versus 1 on 10?
Read Sample Student Paper Aloud [each student takes a paragraph, ask students to highlight claims as they listen to the paper] [15 minutes]
