The First-Year Writing Program Award for Outstanding Research Project

Sponsored by Cengage, publishers of Writing Analytically The First-Year Writing Program Award for Outstanding Research Project recognizes an outstanding analytical research project completed in English 110 at The Ohio State University. Three awards for $100 each, sponsored by Cengage Publishing (Writing Analytically), are available. Instructors can nominate one student each year for the Award. A nomination for the Award must include:
  • The student's analytical research project, both hard copy and (.doc);
  • Hard copy of the one-page nominating form filled out completely and signed by both the instructor and the student.
Eligible students must have been enrolled in English 110 in the Department of English between Spring Quarter 2008 and Winter Quarter 2009. The First-Year Writing Program Award for Outstanding Research Project will recognize work that demonstrates excellence in the following areas:
  • Carefully analyzes the message of a primary source, one conveyed by written, visual, and/or audio texts;
  • Examines the purpose of the message and to whom the message is conveyed while speculating on its effectiveness in context;
  • Explains why the way the message is conveyed is timely and relevant and discusses what is at stake in participating in an academic conversation about the topic;
  • Includes a complex thesis that makes a compelling claim about how the primary source communicates a message to a specific audience;
  • Sustains an evolving thesis by introducing complicating evidence and integrating relevant secondary source material;
  • Follows academic conventions, documents all source material correctly, and avoids sentence-level errors while using appropriate and sophisticated sentence structure and style.
All submissions are due on or before April 17, 2009. Submit hard copy of student work, clearly identified with the student's and instructor's names, and permission form to Carolyn Wilkins, DE 421. Email attachments of (.doc) files, where the file name is the student's last name (studentlastname.doc) to wilkins.8@osu.edu. Award recipients and their instructors will be recognized at the Department of English Awards and Honors Ceremony on May 20, 2009.
