Awards for Teachers and Students

Vera Carter Cooley Teaching Award

Application materials are due by April 21, 2008

The Vera Carter Cooley Teaching Award grants $200 annually to an outstanding instructor who has taught in the First-Year Writing Program. Anyone who has taught 109.01, 109.02, 110.03, 110.01, or 110.02 including all computer and honor sections, during the 2007-08 academic year is eligible. GTAs may apply by submitting the materials listed below.

The selection of the winner is based on the following materials:

  • A course syllabus.
  • 2 to 3 class handouts or essay prompts.
  • One photocopied set of discursive student evaluations.
  • A one-page (double-spaced) self-reflective summary of these discursive evaluations.
  • A written evaluation of the instructor's teaching from a faculty member, peer mentor, or Writing Program Administrator.
  • A personal statement (1 - 2 pages, double-spaced) describing the instructor's teaching philosophy, goals, and methods.
  • A cover letter.
The recipient will be chosen by the staff of the First-Year Writing Program, and the award will be presented at the annual English Department Honors Awards ceremony in May.
