M.A. Concentration in Digital Media Studies in English
What differences do media make in the forms, composing practices, and cultural contexts of human expression? The 15-hour M.A. Concentration in Digital Media Studies in English (DMSE) enables graduate students to (1) examine how the study and production of digital media engage intellectual questions at the heart of various areas within English studies, (2) investigate the impact of digital media on the discipline’s definition and study of text, and (3) create and produce digital media texts. As new technologies of writing evolve—from inscription in stone and clay to writing on papyrus and vellum, mechanical printing on inexpensive paper, and composing in digital media—the nature of discourse and our practices of reading and composing, broadly conceived, change dramatically. New technologies offer new possibilities and problems for human expression, help us see familiar forms and practices in new ways, and challenge us to reflect on the complex relationships among technologies, media, composing, and cultural contexts.
The concentration in DMSE enables students to investigate these issues and more as they prepare themselves for further graduate study and/or the workplace, which increasingly require practical and critical engagement with digital media.
