MFA Program: Financial Aid

Fellowships

University Fellowships are available to entering M.F.A. students. Application is made simply by checking the appropriate boxes on the Graduate School Application form. Score reports of the GRE General Test are required. Although there are no rigid guidelines, University Fellowship recipients usually have enthusiastic recommendations, Grade-Point averages of 3.75 or better on a 4.0 scale, GRE verbal scores in the ninetieth percentile or above, and carefully written autobiographical statements. The stipend for a University Fellowship is currently $1,256 per month for twelve months; tuition and non-resident fees are waived. University Fellows are subsequently eligible for Graduate Teaching Associateships (see below). In addition to regular University Fellowships, there are fellowships for minority students.

Graduate Teaching Associateships: Selection, Stipends, Workload

The English Department employs a number of Graduate Teaching Associates as instructors of lower-division courses. For those applying for admission to the graduate program who also wish to be considered for an Associateship, application is made by checking the appropriate box on the Graduate School form. Remuneration in 2009-2010 for new Associates will be at least $12,459.00. Tuition and non-resident fees are waived for all GTA's.

Most G.T.A.'s in English hold a 50% appointment, which requires that in a given quarter they invest approximately twenty hours per week in teaching one five-hour course. Most of the teaching done by new G.T.A.'s is in the basic freshman composition course, English 110. All new G.T.A.'s are required to take English 781, Theory and Practice of Teaching Composition, in their first quarter.

In addition to the Fellowships and Graduate Teaching Associateships (G.T.A.'s) which the English Department offers to eligible graduate students, three Graduate Administrative Associateships (G.A.A.'s) per year are offered by the Graduate Creative Writing Program, two of them as Associate Editors of The Journal and the other as a general Graduate Administrative Associate for the Creative Writing Program. Remuneration for these positions is currently $12,459.00 per year, also. Tuition and non-resident fees are waived for all G.A.A. positions, as well. In addition, advanced creative writing students holding G.T.A. positions are eligible to teach sections of creative writing (English 265, 266 and 268) and literature courses.
