Outreach
Linden McKinley high School Literacy Program
During the 2005-2006 school year, The English Department 's Writing Workshop collaborated with OSU's Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing's Outreach team to work with English teachers at Columbus' Linden McKinley High School to foster greater student fluency and skill with the writing process.Staff members and volunteers engaged 11th and 12th grade students in the writing process by conducting small peer response work groups. In addition to the group sessions, students were also introduced to electronic portfolio technology and provided space on a network to both store and interact with their writing. Students were partnered with eReader volunteers from OSU who respond to work stored in the students' e-portfolios.
Service-Learning Courses
For Autumn 2006, the English Department's Writing Workshop again offers two service learning versions of English 110.03 (First-Year Writing). Evaluations of these courses over the last seven years show that they can provide attractive alternative versions of first year writing for students as they begin the process of being successful college readers and writers. Students may enroll in the courses for a variety of reasons: because they enjoy community service, because they want to help elementary school students, because they are interested in pursing a degree in education, because they are attracted to a hands-on approach to reading and writing. For Autumn Quarter 2006, we offer two service sections, one which works with first graders at Medary Elementary School, and a second section that tutors first graders at Trevitt @ Main Elementary School. If you have questions, please call Mindy Wright, Director, Writing Workshop at 292-8134.In these English 110.03 classes, students practice a number of kinds of college-level essay writing--personal and academic--that focus on issues surrounding literacy and community. This class meets 3 days each week (MWF) in a conventional classroom format. One day each week during class time, OSU students go to to either Medary or Trevitt@ Main to work with students and teachers. Tutorial activities will include reading and writing with young learners.
