Public Lecture on "The Impact of Marriage Bans on Minority Stress and Well-Being in the LGBT Community"
Thirty U.S. states have passed amendments to their state constitutions effectively barring access to and recognition of civil marriages for same-sex couples. The public debate around these amendments has featured frequent negative rhetoric and images of LGBT individuals and their families. Our research has found that exposure to these negative messages is associated with increased levels of stress and depressive symptoms. Family members are also distressed by the campaigns. Concurrently, political activism and participation can be an important coping strategy for LGBT individuals to deal with their stress; however, activism also carries risk of further exposure to negative messages and increased distress. We will discuss the impact of marriage bans on minority stress and the coping strategies LGBT individuals and their families use for dealing with the stress and pursuing equality.
