Henri Cole Wins United States Artists Fellowship

Henri Cole, poet and professor of creative writing in the Ohio State Creative Writing Program, was awarded the United States Artists (USA) Hildreth/Williams Fellow. The award, one of fifty for 2007, is designed to recognize past artistic accomplishments and support new ones, and comes with a $50,000 monetary award.

The USA Fellows program, which honors artists working in eight artistic disciplines, was started in 2006 with the belief that artists make important contributions to better the communities they live in and society in general. It's also a response to the challenges of finding individual artist support in these difficult economic times.

Cole has published six books of poetry, including The Marble Queen (1986), The Zoo Wheel of Knowledge (1989), The Look of Things (1995), The Visible Man (1998), Middle Earth (1998), and most recently, Blackbird and Wolf in 2007. Previous awards include finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Middle Earth, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and an NEA award.

"Having Henri on faculty adds an experienced teacher and a notable poet to our program," said Lee Martin, Director of Creative Writing. "His award brings us added national recognition as we continue to increase our visibility. Many people who might not be giving Ohio State a thought will read about Henri's award, and the Creative Writing Program at The Ohio State University will then be on their radar. All of our Creative Writing faculty members gain us attention via their publications and awards, and Henri's is but the latest example of the good news that spreads the word of our excellence."
