Ohio State MFA in Creative Writing is one of "Five Up-and-Coming" Programs
The article, "Where Great Writers are Made," by Edward J. Delaney, assessed America's top graduate writing programs, and examined how that assessment is determined. Ohio State's program was listed among the programs at Brooklyn College, University of Mississippi, Rutgers University of Newark, and the University of Wisconsin, out of about 300 possible programs in the country.
Lee Martin, Professor of Creative Writing and Director of the Creative Writing program, as well as a 2006 Pulitzer Prize finalist, attributed the program’s recognition to the success of students and alumni: "Our students have always been our best advertisements for the quality of our MFA Program. More and more folks are hearing about the MFA Program at Ohio State because our students and alums are publishing excellent books and winning highly visible awards," Martin said.
"Add to student accomplishments the faculty we've assembled, and the national profile becomes more prominent. We're also a program known for the close mentoring that we offer our students and for the community of mutually supportive writers that we maintain," said Martin.
The list of successful alumni on the Creative Writing Web site is long, and notes writers such as: Rebecca Barry, whose first book Later, At the Bar, was published by Simon and Schuster; Erin Belieu, whose three books of poetry include most recently Black Box; Chris Coake, whose short story collection, We're in Trouble, was published in 2005 by Harcourt; and Aimee Nezhukamatathil, whose three books of poetry include the forthcoming At the Drive-in Volcano; among many others.
