Changes at the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing
Richard "Dickie" Selfe
On September 4, 2007 Selfe will step into the position and hopes to increase the scope of the work done in the CSTW in two ways.
"While working in Humanities Information Systems, I was developing a cadre of graduate and undergraduate students who work as Student Technology Consultants (STC). They help teaching faculty, staff, and graduate students in the College of Humanities who are interested in integrating instructional technologies (of almost any kind) into their classes. What makes this group special is that they meet teachers where they work: in their offices, in their classrooms, or in computer facilities. They work on the machines and applications that the teachers you see everyday and support both long-term (several meetings) or short-term (one meeting) projects. I hope to coordinate the valuable service provided by the STCs with the other programs in the CSTW."
Dean John Roberts has also provided some funding to increase the amount of research sponsored by the CSTW, a process that Dr. Moss had already begun. Selfe explained that "the new research will focus on 21st century writing--writing, broadly construed--that is now common across disciplines and throughout our culture. With the funding provided by Dean Roberts, we hope to sponsor at least eight $5000 research projects per year for the next three years. I'll be sending out a call for research proposals early in the fall quarter."
"I'm looking forward to continuing the very close, synergistic relationship that Dr. Moss has developed between the CSTW, the Rhetoric, Composition and Literacy program, and the English department as a whole. At the same time, we'll continue to reach out to other disciplines and the Columbus community through the CSTW programs."
