"Copyrights and Classrooms," with Shawn Casey (Department of English) and Envera Dukaj (Department of English)
"Teaching Critical Literacies: Technology, Copyright, and Academic Writing," with Shawn Casey, Envera Dukaj, Cormac Slevin (Department of English)

Changing technologies both in and out of the classroom offer instructors the opportunity to challenge and deepen the academic literacies students typically encounter in the disciplinary classroom. This presentation explores how engaging with "new" technologies can help students develop critical literacies in the areas of copyright and academic writing. As the Internet continues to open up new channels of publication for students' work and the walls of the classroom no longer dictate the audience that a student's writing is to receive, issues of copyright and intellectual property law have become topics of central importance to instructors of rhetoric and composition. While recent legislation continues to threaten both the public domain and our classroom practices, it also emphasizes the need to include students in the debate by teaching options of fair use, and an awareness of the potential risks of copy left activism.

11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Institute for Collaborative Research and Public Humanities at the George Wells Knight House 104 E. 15th Avenue. Lunch is provided. For more information, contact Kate White at white.1142@osu.edu.
