R.L. Stine Scholarship for Undergraduate Creative Writing

R. L. Stine Scholarship

The Department of English is very pleased to announce the inaugural R.L. Stine Scholarship, an undergraduate scholarship for Ohio State English majors who have demonstrated a serious interest in Creative Writing. The student selected will receive a scholarship of $11,000, to be used for tuition and fees, room and board, and other educational expenses. R.L. Stine Scholarships in this same amount will be offered for the next four years (2016-20), with a call for applications made early each Spring semester.

This scholarship has been generously provided by author R.L. Stine, an OSU English alumnus (B.A. 1965) and award-winning author of children’s horror stories including the famous Goosebumps series.

Eligibility: Candidates must have completed at least one 4000-level creative writing workshop in the OSU Department of English. Preference will be given to English majors entering their junior or senior year who have demonstrated a serious interest in creative writing.

Applications: Students who meet the above criteria should submit an application consisting of (1) a cover sheet with the student’s name and complete contact information and a list of any creative writing courses taken at OSU and (2) a writing sample in the genre(s) of the student’s choice—poetry, fiction, and/or creative nonfiction—of no fewer than 15 and no more than 40 pages. These materials should be emailed as an attachment with the subject line "Stine scholarship application" to Pablo Tanguay (tanguay.1@osu.edu) as soon as possible but no later than August 3, 2015 for consideration for the scholarship for 2015-2016.

Selection and Award Process: The selection committee will be composed of Creative Writing faculty members from the Department of English, and the award will be granted on the basis of artistic and writerly excellence. The selection committee’s recommendation must be approved by the Chair of English in consultation with Student Financial Aid. The 2015-16 R.L. Stine Scholarship recipient will be announced on or about August 17, 2015.
