McCorkle Receives Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching

Ohio State Associate Professor of English, Ben McCorkle was awarded the 2014 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching during a surprise visit to his English 5662 class in Morrill Hall on the Marion campus late Monday afternoon.

The Ohio State University Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching is considered the highest honor an Ohio State faculty member can receive.  The Distinguished Teaching Award honors faculty members university-wide for superior teaching.  Recipients are nominated by present and former students and colleagues and are chosen by a committee of alumni, students, and faculty.   Recipients of the prestigious honor are inducted into the university's Academy of Teaching, which provides leadership for the improvement of teaching at Ohio State.

The award was presented by Ohio State Vice Provost for Academic and Strategic Planning and Special Assistant to the President, Michael J. Boehm.  Professor Richard Dutton, Interim Chair of the Department of English at The Ohio State University; Ohio State Marion Dean & Director, Gregory S. Rose; Ohio State Marion Associate Dean, Bishun Pandey, and an estimated group of 35-40 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to witness the surprise announcement and personally congratulate McCorkle.

McCorkle’s students in his English 5662 class echoed many of the nominations received by the university on his behalf.

“Ben is an amazing instructor.  This distinction is well deserved,” said senior English major Casey Edgington.

Ben McCorkle is an associate professor of English at The Ohio State University at Marion, where he teaches courses on composition, the history and theory of rhetoric, and digital media production.  He is the author of the book Rhetorical Delivery as Technological Discourse: A Cross-Historical Study, published by Southern Illinois University Press. He has also published essays in various journals and edited collections, including Computers and Composition Online, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, and Composition Studies.
