What do a sixteenth-century Italian miller and a twenty-first century elementary school student have in common?  This lecture will explore an experiment in service learning with literacy as the object of service in a course on European cultural history. Kolleen Guy is Associate Professor of History at University of Texas, San Antonio. She has received  the University of Texas  Board of Regents Distinguished Teaching Award and the UTSA President’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Her talk will look at how working with a contemporary literacy in the public schools helps students experience reading as an oral and collective activity, leading to insights about past and present communities. This event is co-sponsored by Literacy Studies and History.
