20th Century Poetry

Class Description

This course will provide you with a solid grounding in Modern Poetry: we will read and study in detail the major poems of W. B. Yeats, W. H. Auden, T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Robert Frost, Wallace Stevens, and W. C. Williams. We will also read poems by Emily Dickinson, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Thomas Hardy, H. D., Gertrude Stein, the First World War poets, e. e. cummings, Marianne Moore, Langston Hughes, and Louis MacNeice. We will end with two books of contemporary poetry: Elizabeth Bishop's Geography III and Seamus Heaney's The Haw Lantern. There will be a midterm, several short in-class writing assignments, a 6-8 page paper, and a final. You will also be asked to memorize and present a short poem to the class.
